The day's tech, sifted: Nov 08, 2026
What matters today: Politics and money set the tone, and by evening the money was about compute. An Anthropic-backed super PAC spent $63M+ in the midterms and won 10 of 17 races, while the US moved to cut MEXC off from American finance. Later reports add Anthropic's $3.4B generator buy for its data centers and OpenAI's $11B raise at a $1.25T valuation. On the developer side, a report says one coding agent's permission shortcut left passwords in public repos.
AI / LLMs
- AI safety in the midterms: Bloomberg says Anthropic-backed super PAC Public First spent $63M+ and 10 of the 17 congressional candidates it backed won. Politico adds the origin story: a small, wealthy network organized in Signal chats that beat the $100M super PAC Leading the Future. Why it matters: stricter-oversight candidates now have a proven funding model heading into AI legislation.
- Nous Research Arete-27B: Nous released Arete-27B, a post-trained version of Alibaba's Qwen3.8-27B, an open-weights model you can run yourself. Update since the morning: Nous says the tune cuts state-aligned political framing from 22% to under 1% using 53M tokens of post-training, and argues the base model's bias layer is shallow. Why it matters: if the claim holds, a cheap tune can reshape a model's politics, so provenance of the base model says less than it used to. Nous's own numbers so far.
- OpenAI raises $11B: OpenAI raised $11B at a $1.25T valuation, below the $1.4T it first sought. Why it matters: the round closed under the opening ask, a data point on how much investors will pay for frontier labs.
- Suno sued again: rights holders of Elvis Presley's music and the publisher of Eminem's biggest records are suing Suno, claiming it generates music and lyrics that mimic the artists. The Presley suit invokes Tennessee's ELVIS Act, which bars cloning a singer's voice. Allegations only; Suno already faces other suits.
- Apple wants an agentic Siri: Bloomberg's sources say new CEO John Ternus is pushing Craig Federighi to move past Siri tweaks to agentic features, and 9to5Mac reports Apple aims to make Siri "more like an agent" as soon as next year. Why it matters: Apple is signaling it will chase assistants that act, not just answer.
- AutoTrust Labs JEV-27B: a 27B "decision model" scores option probabilities in one token instead of writing free-form answers, and reports 97 on tool selection across 37 benchmarks. Vendor numbers only; treat as a claim until others reproduce it.
- Benchmark skepticism: MaxxBench questions DeepSWE scores under the line "Nice DeepSWE score. But is it true?", a push to check whether coding-agent leaderboard numbers hold up.
Devtools & Infra
- Claude Code secrets leak: Apiiro says Claude Code's "Don't Ask Again" permission option exposed passwords in 1,122 public GitHub files. Why it matters: a convenience setting that stops prompting also stops a human from catching secrets before they are committed.
- GitHub PR overview: GitHub put a new pull request overview page into public preview, a redesigned landing view for reviewing changes.
- Prefetch waste in Datasette: Simon Willison found Datasette's
rel=nextlink header made Firefox prefetch the next page of rows on every table view, forcing the server to render pages almost nobody opens. The fix stops serving that header to Firefox for HTML pages. - pgvector vs dedicated vector DBs: a 14-minute comparison covers memory, filters and index builds, the practical test for whether Postgres is enough for your embeddings.
Security & Privacy
- MEXC and the Treasury: the US Treasury is moving to cut crypto exchange MEXC off from the US financial system, alleging $16B+ in illicit flows including Russian and Iranian sanctions evasion.
- Crypto braces for Democrats: FT says the industry expects a reckoning after Democrats won the midterms and vowed to investigate the Trump family's ties to crypto.
- Binance CFO exits: Binance's CFO stepped down nine days after a record hack; the co-CEO says the transition was planned six months ago.
- Coldframe honeypot: a Show HN project poses as a supermarket refrigeration controller, cloned from real Danfoss and Dixell interfaces, to watch what attackers try after recent incidents on industrial fridges. Single Python file, standard library only.
Startups & Industry
- SpaceX Starbase supercomputer: public records suggest SpaceX is building a "Starbase supercomputer" in Texas, per The Information, though the election of Gina Hinojosa as governor may delay parts of the data center plans.
- Southeast Asia data centers: SEA is about 50% of APAC data center capacity under construction, and a Guardian-reported study says Malaysia and Thailand paused 49 projects and delayed approvals of 117 in September on power and water limits.
- Anthropic buys generators: FT sources say Anthropic bought commitments for 1.7GW of gas-fired generators from supplier OnePWR for $3.4B, the largest known such purchase by an AI lab, going around traditional suppliers to get scarce equipment. Why it matters: power equipment, not chips, is now what labs fight over.
- Inner Mongolia builds fast: SemiAnalysis says Inner Mongolia is China's fastest-growing AI data center region, with an 800MW wind-powered campus where 120MW was built within a year and no public backlash. The contrast with the paused projects in Southeast Asia is the story.
- GPU supply: Engadget says there is no end in sight for the GPU supply problem.
- Apple's Singapore tax shelter: FT reports filings show Apple saved $2.7B in taxes this year by routing up to $50B in profits through Singapore, ahead of the $2.6B saved via Ireland.
- GenRobot AI: the Beijing robot-data company raised a $100M Series A+ for equipment and software that collects human demonstrations to train robots.
Elsewhere
- Apple's grey list: the Guardian reports Apple's keyboard won't help spell certain words and phrases, a "grey list" of words and phrases.
Hacker News
The front page leans on agents, power and tinkering. Coding-agent tooling drew the most heat: the Claude Code secrets report (280 points), a switch from Claude to Pi (307 points, 182 comments), a call for an open agent memory format, and MaxxBench questioning coding-agent scores. Llama-modchip claims a 284B DeepSeek model on 64GB RAM with no GPU, vendor-style claim until others reproduce it. OpenAI's $11B raise is covered above. Elsewhere: Apple's spelling grey list (415 points, 268 comments), a Windows Latest case for dropping Electron, the Coldframe honeypot, and the weekend pick, a $10 OpenStick homelab (465 points).
Threads
- Agents and trust: the Claude Code secrets leak and MaxxBench both ask how far to trust what coding agents produce or score.
- Compute limits: SEA's paused data centers, GPU supply and SpaceX's Texas build all run into power, water, chips or politics.
- Crypto fallout: MEXC and the Binance CFO exit show regulators and executives reacting to illicit flows and record hacks.
- Power is the AI bottleneck: Anthropic's generator deal and Inner Mongolia's wind-powered campus join the compute-limits thread above.
- Fridges under fire: Coldframe is a response to recent industrial fridge incidents.
